WhatsApp Messenger is definitely the most used messaging application in the world, officials of the company that owns the service announcing today a record number of active users for this title. In an article published on its own blog, the company that owns the WhatsApp service Talk about the success story behind the most popular messaging app, 400 million people using it every month, while only 40 engineers work constantly to keep the service up and running and all without displaying any promotional banners.
A few short years ago, my friend Brian and I set out to build a messaging service with a single focus: best possible user experience. We bet that if our team of engineers could make messaging fast, simple, and personal, we could charge people directly for the service without having to rely on annoying banner ads, game promotions, or all those other distracting "features" that come with many messaging apps. When we say that you made this possible, we mean it. WhatsApp has just 50 employees, and most of us are engineers. We've arrived at this point without spending a dollar on targeted ads or big marketing campaigns. We're here because of all the people who share their WhatsApp stories with co-workers, friends, and loved ones – stories we love to hear.
Despite the fact that we are talking about a company with a small number of employees, WhatsApp has an application that has generated a valuation of several billion dollars and several acquisition proposals, refused for now. WhatsApp Messenger has a fairly simple monetization model, the developers asking users only $1 per year for using the application, the amount being small, but apparently sufficient for them. Although no one knows this, the information obtained by the company from analyzing the application usage data is much more valuable than the money obtained from subscriptions, this generating enough money annually.
