Games for Apple TV 4 must be compatible with the remote control

Apple TV 4 gamesApple TV 4 it has a touch remote control, Siri Remote, which can also work as a controller for games, but although initially Apple did not force developers to implement compatibility for it in titles, well things have changed.

Apple says that the games for Apple TV 4 must be compatible with the Siri remote control and not only with the third-party controllers created by other developers, so that all those who initiated the development processes of new titles will have to rethink their strategy.

Although it was normal to expect Apple to impose the obligation to develop games with compatibility for Siri Remote, unfortunately this restriction will seriously limit the ability of games to offer us extended functionality at the time of launch in the App Store.

  • Your game must support the Apple TV remote. Your game may not require the use of a controller.
  • tvOS games that support controllers must support the extended control layout. All controllers for tvOS have non-formfitting extended controllers.
  • Games must be playable using standalone controllers. If you support an extended controller, the game must be playable solely with that controller.
  • You must support the pause button. All controllers include a pause button. When gameplay is active, pressing the pause button should pause gameplay. When the game is not being played, such as when you are at a menu screen, the pause button moves to a previous screen of content.

Considering that Siri Remote was not intended as a remote control for games, but as a remote control for the operating system interface, developers will have to seriously limit their titles to make them 100% compatible with what Apple wants.

Having said that, those who expected Apple TV 4 to offer great games, similar to those for consoles, now receive a new news that may make them think twice before buying the American product.
