iMessage hack spams users with messages in Chinese

A hack that affected iMessage and iCloud allowed some Asian hackers to access data from users' Apple IDs.

A major problem hit Apple users in several countries around the world yesterday, who reported that their Apple IDs were hacked and iMessage accessed. According to these people, while using iDevices/Macs they received messages according to which their Apple ID was accessed from another Apple product, they could only confirm the alert and that was it.

A few minutes after the display of this alert, users started to be spammed by SMS or iMessage messages that had texts in Chinese. By contacting the Apple company, the users found out that they are not the only ones experiencing that problem at that point and that many other people contacted Apple for the exact same reason during the day yesterday.

Changing the Apple ID password and activating the 2-step authentication system solved the problem, and the messages quickly stopped. Apple said that it is not known if customer data was accessed as a result of this hack, although everything seems extremely possible, and the spam messages received by people promoted casinos in Macau.

As you can see from the images, we are talking about a lot of messages received by users after their Apple IDs were hacked, the situation being unprecedented. During the last night, the Apple company carried out maintenance work on the iCloud servers in many countries around the world, so it probably blocked the access of hackers and solved the vulnerabilities in the system.

For now, the Apple company has not provided details about this hack that gave some hackers access to the data from the users' Apple IDs. In this idea, there is the possibility that many information stored in their backups have been stolen by hackers and will be used in the future for other attacks, or to steal money from bank accounts.

It is difficult to say if we are talking about a phishing attack used to obtain Apple ID passwords, considering that the accounts of some journalists were also affected, or if it is a hack in the true sense of the word. However, since the accounts of some people who know how to protect themselves from phishing attacks have been affected, it is likely that we are talking about an access to Apple's servers by hackers.
