iOS 10.1 – security issues resolved by Apple

In iOS 10.1, two serious security issues were resolved that could affect users opening PDF or JPEG files.

Among the changes made by the Apple company in the framework iOS 10.1 it also counts solving a serious security problem that threatens users all over the world. More precisely, we are talking about a vulnerability that could be exploited by opening PDF documents or JPEG images in our iDevices.

According to Apple, hackers who know this vulnerability can create PDF documents or JPEG images that contain code that allows exploiting iOS. Accessing these images using the Safari browser allowed hackers to run unsigned code in Apple's iDevices, and from here the terminal was probably restarted or closed immediately.

Those from Apple do not provide details regarding the effect of activating this vulnerability on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, so we do not know what is going wrong. However, it is as clear as possible that accessing this type of file has negative consequences for users of iDevices that do not run iOS 10.1, so updating is recommended.

This security issue affects not only iOS versions prior to iOS 10.1, but also macOS versions prior to macOS 10.12.1, so even Mac users are vulnerable. Having said that, it is advisable to install both updates for the Apple operating system as soon as possible in order to be protected from such problems.

"Parsing a maliciously crafted PDF may lead to arbitrary code execution. Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG file may lead to arbitrary code execution.”
