WhatsApp - this is how messages and calls can be intercepted

WhatsApp has a vulnerability that allows the interception of messages and VoIP calls, and in this article you can see a demonstration of it.

WhatsApp is in the middle of a huge scandal last week, bringing into discussion a vulnerability that allows the interception of VoIP messages and calls. The WhatsApp application has implemented a system that allows messages to be secured using a secure network, but a researcher in computer security has discovered what he calls a vulnerability.

More precisely, if the encryption key of WhatsApp conversations, without which the messages cannot be intercepted, changes to one of the interlocutors, the messages sent by him are not blocked, but sent. Through this modification, they can be intercepted by WhatsApp and can even be made available to the authorities in a criminal investigation.

Notified about the problem, Facebook representatives stated that this is not a problem of WhatsApp, but a normal functionality. Moreover, the creators of the security system used by WhatsApp, and implicitly by the Signal application, support the Facebook company and say that everything is as normal as possible, although the Signal application does not have the vulnerability.

WhatsApp - this is how messages and calls can be intercepted

To demonstrate how the WhatsApp vulnerability can be exploited, the researcher in computer security published two videos in which he shows us everything. He demonstrates how WhatsApp messages can be intercepted, but also VoIP calls that can be made through the application, so basically it is completely vulnerable.

Various experts in computer security support either WhatsApp and Facebook, or the researcher who discovered the problem and demanded that it be solved. In this idea, users remain without a clear answer regarding the problems that WhatsApp has at the moment and without knowing if they can use the application without fear of having their messages intercepted.

Considering the great controversy behind this problem of the WhatsApp platform, it is difficult to say to what extent a clear answer will be given regarding the vulnerability. Those from WhatsApp and Facebook will continue to claim that everything is normal, even if a variety of evidence will appear to support the exact opposite of what they say.
