Apple Watch 3 has a screen that could end up in the iPhone

Apple Watch 3 is currently in development and will be released in the fall of this year, and according to recent information, it would have a micro-LED screen. A variety of rumors that appeared in recent years suggest that Apple is developing micro-LED screens in at least one laboratory, and the Apple Watch 3 could be just one of the products that will benefit from it.

The information that appeared today suggests that Apple could adopt micro-LED screens including in its iPhone terminals, currently testing a version for iPhone 8. Apple will use an OLED screen in iPhone 8, but micro-LED technology could reach future iPhone models after it will be used in the final version of Apple Watch 3.

Micro-LED screens are smaller than OLED or LCD alternatives, consume less energy, are thinner and weigh much less. Basically, Apple is making a major change for the Apple Watch 3, and those from LG will be strongly affected because they are the main suppliers of OLED screens for the Apple Watch, their receipts will be lower by up to 200 million dollars.

However, if Apple decides to abandon OLED for the iPhone and use micro-LED, then it could deal even bigger blows to Samsung, or other OLED screen suppliers in the future. The choice of micro-LED screens would be extremely beneficial for Apple's iPhone series, but it is hard to say if the technology is viable for use in smartphones.

"Apple will begin mass production of micro-LED displays at the Taoyuan plant in Taiwan from the end of this year and use them on its new smartwatch, Apple Watch 3. Apple will use an OLED panel on the iPhone 8 to be launched in the second half of this year after testing the panel on the Apple Watch. Considering such precedent, Apple is highly likely to use a micro-LED display on its smartphones after testing the panel on the Apple Watch."
