Samsung and Google Support Apple in the Fight with Qualcomm

Samsung, Google and many other important companies support those from Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), in the legal dispute they have with Qualcomm due to licensing fees for certain technologies. You already know that Apple and Qualcomm have various lawsuits open in many countries because Apple refused to pay licensing fees to Qualcomm for certain technologies, the company's revenues falling by 42%.

Samsung, Google and many other companies that are part of the Association for Computers and Communications, take Apple's side in the legal dispute with those from Qualcomm. Samsung, Intel, Google, Amazon and several other important companies are part of this association, submitting a joint statement to the American authorities in which they say that the ban on iPhone imports, requested by Qualcomm, would affect consumers.

Qualcomm also asked to block imports of iPhone terminals that have Intel modems, so not its own, the association saying that such a decision would affect consumers and increase terminal prices. Moreover, the decision would help Qualcomm use its monopoly power to force Apple and other companies to pay higher amounts for licensing its technologies.

Apple is not a member of this association, but the interest of the companies is completely different from helping Apple, they are protecting their interests against those from Qualcomm. Some of the companies in the association buy products from Qualcomm and license technologies, those from Intel being direct competitors, so they have every interest in affecting the manufacturer's activity, something that will most likely happen.

"They argued that barring Apple from importing foreign-assembled iPhones that use Intel Corp chips - as Qualcomm has requested - would cause "significant shocks to supply" for phones and would hurt consumers. If the ITC were to grant this exclusion order, it would help Qualcomm use its monopoly power for further leverage against Apple and allow them to drive up prices on consumer devices," Ed Black, the CEO of the group, said in a statement. What's at stake here is certainly the availability of iPhones and other smartphones at better prices."
