The backups that are saved in Google Drive will be permanently kept for free by Google, but those that are more than a year old will be deleted, so it is advisable to make constant backups in WhatsApp in order not to lose data.

WhatsApp offers everything for Android users, and this is because Google Drive cannot be chosen on the iPhone as an option for saving backups, iCloud being the only option offered by the Apple company. Considering this limitation, iPhone users will still have to pay for space in iCloud, while Android users of WhatsApp will enjoy free backup in Google Drive, even if they have an account without a subscription on the Google platform.
"Starting November 12, 2018, WhatsApp backups will no longer count towards the Google Drive storage quota. Furthermore, WhatsApp backups that haven't been updated in more than one year will be automatically removed from Google Drive storage. To avoid the loss of any backups, we recommend you manually back up your WhatsApp data before November 12, 2018."
WhatsApp makes a very important change through this free service, because many users will now have more free space to upload other types of files to Google Drive. WhatsApp backups can take up from a few hundred MB to a few GB of data, depending on what is being saved, so the change could free up a lot of space in Google Drive, and it could even help you to get rid of the monthly payment for a larger subscription.
