About Quarterly I spoke 3 months ago when we told you that it is the first iPhone application that allows users to create a 3D portrait based on a person's facial features. From then until now the application has evolved quite a lot and 3 days ago an update for it was released in the AppStore which allows us to create real 3D models based on our face and likeness. As you can see in the clip above, the application records a 3D model of our face and using a 3D printer we can make a physical model of the 3D representation recorded by our iPhone.

Here's what Quarterly 1.02 brings:

  • Create a Quicktime movie of any 3D model rotating (shared via email).
  • Create an animated GIF of any 3D model rotating (shared via email).
  • New "flick" gesture to restart spinning models in 3D view.
  • 3D Model Export (In-App Purchase): Export any scan as an OBJ, STL, or PLY file via email, with optional mesh smoothing. OBJ: texture-mapped polygonal model compatible with Maya, Blender, and most other 3D software packages, STL: waterproof geometry suitable for 3D printing, PLY: point cloud with position (XYZ) and color (RGB) information per vertex.

It is true that for the moment the application is useless, but if that 3D model design algorithm could also be used for objects, then things could become really interesting.
