Google Play is the king of app downloads, the App Store of revenue

App Store Google Play app downloads

Just a few years ago App Store was the undisputed "king" of the application stores for mobile terminals with the most downloads, receipts and profit generated for the company Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, but in the last year and a half things have changed radically on this market.

Google Playthe del la Google evolved at a fast pace so that at the moment the virtual store of those from Mountain View has more applications than App Store, and thanks to this, it also generates a much larger number of application downloads.

In the image above you have the most recent study carried out for this segment and it can be observed as clearly as possible that Google Play generates almost 2 times more downloads for applications than App Store, this being a first in this sense for the two companies.

Google Play extends its edge in downloads to 85%, while iOS maintains its lead in revenue. But the biggest story in Q2? The strong performance of video streaming apps. Video streaming growth led to the Entertainment category moving up to #4 by worldwide iOS revenue. Not only are streaming apps like HBO Now showing popularity in the US, China also saw explosive revenue growth headlined by Youku, iQIYI and Tencent Video.

If we look at the revenues, things are completely different, because the App Store generates revenues almost 2 times higher than Google Play, and this is not at all surprising considering that the same thing has been happening for a very, very long time.

Basically, although Google Play has 2 times more quarterly downloads than the App Store, it only manages to generate half of the App Store's revenue, and that says a lot about the types of users who use Android terminals.

It has been said many times that Android is preferred by people with limited financial resources, and this is confirmed again by this study, Android users being reluctant to buy applications from Google Play for daily use.
