Telekom is one of the largest telecommunications groups in all of Romania at the moment, and millions of customers are targeted by an official announcement that will have a big impact on them. More precisely, the European Commission announced that on June 8 it was notified by Telekom that it had sold its fixed services division to Orange, awaiting an approval of the transaction in order to complete the procedure by companies.
Telekom officially announced its decision to sell the fixed services division in Romania quite some time ago, together with Orange officially confirming the plans in the first part of this year. Now the European Commission has been notified about the transaction that Telekom and Orange want to do, and on July 13th a decision by the European authorities should come regarding the transition of the fixed division of the German group to the subsidiary of the French group.
Telekom: Important Official Announcement for Millions of Customers
Telekom searched for a good period of time for a buyer for the entire subsidiary in Romania, but found only for the fixed services, the mobile services will continue to remain part of the German group. If the sale of Telekom's fixed services division to Orange is approved in the middle of next month, then in August a new company should be created to take over everything, and from September the transition to Orange should be completed.
Telekom would send to Orange all the customers who have Internet, television, or fixed-mobile convergent services, that is, somewhere around 4 million customers, if I am not mistaken. This transaction is the most important on the telecommunications market in Romania since 2014, when Telekom took over the former Romtelecom and Cosmote, and is now selling the first of them due to the very strong competition from RCS & RDS.
Telekom will collect several hundred million euros from the sale of this division, it being a profitable one, even if not very profitable, but even so, it brought serious amounts for the German group.
