The Ministry of Health comes today with an answer to one of the most burning questions that Romanians have regarding the new Coronavirus, and the clarifications are important in the context of the current circulation of a lot of fake news on the Internet.

The Ministry of Health says that smoking and vaping are a risk factor in the case of the new Coronavirus, as they can increase both the risk of infection and the evolution towards severe forms of the disease, and it is good to know this from an official source of information.

"The World Health Organization warns that both hands and cigarettes can be contaminated, and by bringing them repeatedly to the level of the mouth, infection is favored. Smoking also increases the number of receptors that the new coronavirus uses to enter cells and infect them => increasing the risk of infection in smokers.

The consumption of other tobacco-based products (hookah) favors transmission from one person to another, especially through the use of non-sterile mouthpieces and hoses.

Smokers present certain abnormalities in the lungs (inflammation, fibrosis), which prevent their proper functioning under normal conditions.

In case of an infection, including with the new coronavirus, the risk of developing a severe form of the disease is increased in the case of smokers due to the already existing abnormalities in the lungs."
