Ministry of Health Delta Variant Spreads in Romania Causes Deaths

The Ministry of Health, through CNSCBT, published today an updated situation regarding the cases of Coronavirus generated by the Delta variant, and of those for which sequencing was done, 87 confirmed cases with this variant were discovered.

The Ministry of Health says that until now 3 deaths have been confirmed due to infection with this new delta strain, and one of the infected people infected 5 other family members, so the extremely high contagiousness of this strain is confirmed.

"Until July 11, 2021, 87 cases with the Delta variant have been confirmed:

56% (49 cases) are in 18 outbreaks, of which 13 are family (22 cases) and 5 community (27 cases), from 7 counties: Argeș (3), Bacău (1), Brașov (1), Dolj (4), Ilfov (3), Iasi (1), Teleorman (1) and the municipality of Bucharest (4);

Among the outbreak cases, 4 had a history of travel to an area with sustained community transmission of the Delta variant (3 in India), respectively 1 in Finland.

36% (31 cases) have no mentioned epidemiological link;

6% (5 sporadic cases) have travel history, of which 2 in the UK, 1 in Turkey,
1 in Ireland and 1 is an employee of an international transport company;

2% (2 cases) refused to collaborate with DSP;

3 deaths were recorded in confirmed cases with the Delta variant:

  • 72-year-old woman, from Argeș county, with medical conditions
    pre-existing and unvaccinated against SARS-CoV-2;
  • 62-year-old man from Bacău county, with history of travel to Ireland, having pre-existing medical conditions and not vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2;
  • 35-year-old man from Bacău county, with history of travel to Finland, having pre-existing medical conditions and not vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2; was the source of a family outbreak with 5 cases of COVID-19, of which 4 were confirmed with the Delta variant;

At this moment there is no evidence of sustained community transmission, at the national level, of the Delta variant."
