NATO has officially announced the fact that the French army forces have deployed a MAMBA anti-missile defense system in Romania as part of the anti-aircraft defense measures enjoyed by Romania during this period, all being part of a defense strategy at the European level, Patriot systems being deployed in Slovakia and Poland.
"The deployment of the French state-of-the-art MAMBA weapon system and an air defense command post in Romania boosts NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) starting on 16 May. In a collective effort, several allies are providing both fighter jets and missile systems for a heightened defensive posture on the eastern flank following Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
With the deployment of a surface-to-air missile defense system in Romania, France has further increased its forward footprint in support of NATO's increased vigilance against the potential threat from the East.
These deployments are critical enhancements that enhance the Alliance's IAMD posture in a changing geopolitical environment.
"In addition to France's deployment to Romania, Germany and the Netherlands deployed PATRIOT batteries to Slovakia, and the United States sent two PATRIOT batteries to Poland in April 2022. The main components of the system are the Aster 30 interceptor missile and the Arabel multifunctional radar. MAMBA can operate in an electronic warfare environment and is interoperable with other NATO air defense systems.”
