Huawei. The Chinese company ended 2018 with a very hard blow by the US government, which started contacting its allies, especially those in NATO, to warn them about the danger posed by Chinese products. Although the Americans claim that they have alerted all their partners regarding the threat posed by the use of Huawei equipment, the Romanian Ministry of Communications and Information Society says that it knows nothing.

Huawei. The minister stated for the Romanian press that he has started a consultation with the state institutions, which deal with national security, to see what risks our country is exposed to by using Chinese products. Practically, the Ministry of Communications and Information Society is not "up to date" with the problems that everyone is talking about, Huawei having some of its products already banned in certain European countries, but also from other continents, other bans being prepared.

Huawei. What is the Romanian Government doing after the US ALERTS

Huawei. Even if the Ministry of Communications and Information Society does not know anything about the security problems that the Chinese products might have, those from SRI, MAE, MAI, STS, should have information in this regard. Huawei is a manufacturer whose equipment is used in IT systems that concern the national security of the country, so, theoretically, if there were problems with them, then there should certainly be an institution that knows what is happening.

We specify that our institution does not yet have additional information received from American or European partners on the subject of Huawei. Therefore, we have launched a consultation process with national institutions and authorities with competence and expertise in this field in order to gather all the relevant information available to the Romanian state authorities on this subject. We will return with updated information as the inter-institutional consultation process is completed.

Huawei. Considering the way things "move" in the Romanian state, a few months could pass before the Ministry of Communications and Information Society could provide information on this issue. Of course, the blame should not be placed on the SRI, or the other institutions that protect Romania, but considering that more than half a year has passed since the problems with Huawei equipment were announced, and the MCSI knows nothing, the lack of interest for national security.
