Find My iPhone ajuta zeci sau poate chiar sute de mii de persoane anual sa isi gaseasca iDevice-urile pierdute sau furate, insa serviciul este in centrul unui nou proces intentat companiei Apple. O companie din Texas a chemat in judecata Apple, Google, Verizon si alte mari companii, afirmand ca serviciile acestora, similare Find My iPhone, creeaza un monopol pe piata si impiedica lansarea altora similare. Compania invoca un brevet de inventie care pare sa descrie o parte a functionalitatii serviciului Find My iPhone, iar Apple ar putea avea o mare problema din cauza sa.
In response to a telephone caller’s inquiry, a computer-based locating system determines the whereabouts of a person (or object) of interest and generates a message for the caller which describes that location. Then, if prompted by the caller, the locating system automatically places the call to the telephone extension nearest that location. An important technical advantage of the invention is that no telephone operator or PBX switchboard attendant is needed to place a call directly to an individual, which decreases the connect time and overall expense of the system.
Remote Locator Services LLC, reclamantul in cazul proceselor, este prezentata ca o companie fantoma catre care a fost cedat acest brevet de inventie, insa nu se stie cine o finantateaza si cine i l-a atribuit, compania nederuland afaceri in momentul de fata. Desi nimeni nu stie cine se afla in spatele acestei campanii impotriva marilor companii IT, problema ar putea fi una importanta daca instantele vor decide ca brevetul de inventie este incalcat.
