AT&T, China Mobile, M3 Group and Telenor could enter the Romanian market

Map of Romania

Ever since 2010, it was rumored that the American mobile phone operator AT&T would be interested in investing in the Romanian market, and this year the rumors have been brought back up to date. Those from Pro TV I maintain that the Romanian government is in discussions with AT&T, China Mobile, M3 Group and Telenor and I hope that at least one of these 4 operators will invest in Romania. The government wants to bring a sixth mobile phone operator to the market to increase competition and to reduce the prices of subscriptions/options offered by our operators.

From 2012, the number of mobile phone operators in Romania could increase. Among those who expressed their desire to enter our market are China Mobile, the American company AT&T, M3 Group and Telenor.

"The state wants this to increase competition on the market, where the great players seem to have gotten used to each other. Bringing in a new operator would result in lower prices for the mobile bill and higher receipts for the state from licenses for the use of frequencies. China Mobile, AT&T, M3 Group and Telenor have expressed their interest in entering the Romanian market", said Marius Fecioru, secretary of state in the Ministry of Communications, for ProTV News.

It is not yet known at what stage the discussions between the operators and the Romanian government are, but we are talking about 4 giants that should build their own network if they will not buy a local mobile operator. I hope that the government's initiative bears fruit because a fourth operator would always be welcome.
