Microsoft currently has one of the most popular consoles on the market, XBOX 360, and will launch next year XBOX 720. To give users even more reasons to invest in its technology, Microsoft presented an interesting concept called IllumiRoom, and in the video clip above you have presented it. Basically, the idea of those from Microsoft is to augment the rooms in which the players use the consoles, removing the barriers imposed by the television and turning the whole room into the "battlefield" that we theoretically only see on the screen.

IllumiRoom is a proof-of-concept system from Microsoft Research. It augments the area surrounding a television screen with projected visualizations to enhance the traditional living room entertainment experience. IllumiRoom uses a Kinect for Windows camera and a projector to blur the lines between on-screen content and the environment we live in, allowing us to combine our virtual and physical worlds. For example, our system can change the appearance of the room, induce apparent motion, extend the field of view, and enable entirely new game experiences.

Using a kinect sensor and a camera, the IllumiRoom transforms our rooms into the virtual spaces we see in games, all with the idea of generating the impression of total immersion in the game. The idea is very interesting, it is revolutionary and if Microsoft succeeds in bringing something like this to the market, it will change the console market quite a bit. Practically, users will live much more intensely the moments spent playing with friends or doing missions in their favorite games, and this will generate an increase in sales and the rate of use of games.

Our system uses the appearance and the geometry of the room (captured by Kinect) to adapt the projected visuals in real-time without any need to custom pre-process the graphics. What you see in the videos below has been captured live and is not the result of any special effects added in post production.

Those from Microsoft will provide additional details about IllumiRoom at a conference called ACM CHI 2013 which will take place at the end of April, but until then you can find more details on WEBSITE their. What do you think about IllumiRoom?
