Microsoft Surface would have sold only 1.7 million copies since its launch until now

Microsoft Surface is the line of tablets launched by Microsoft together with Windows 8, but unfortunately the company was not so successful in convincing users that they are really worth buying. Those from Microsoft paid 900 million dollars to produce these tablets, but the revenues generated by them rises only about 853 million dollars. It seems that Microsoft managed to sell only about 1.7 million units worldwide (at an average price of $500 per unit), far below what the company expected.

But hypothetically, if the average price were $500 (the original price of the base-level Surface RT), the revenue figure suggests that total units sold were in the range of 1.7 million units as of the end of June. That's roughly in line with a Bloomberg News report in March, saying that the company had sold 1.5 million units as of that point, well below its original aspirations.

The figure is small even if we think that Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), sold 3 million tablets iPad in 3 days in November last year, then the 1.7 million units sold by Microsoft in 8 months are a joke. If we make a comparison with the launch of iPad 1, then things are not so great for Microsoft, Apple selling almost 10 times more units in 8 months of availability of iPad in 2010. It is clear that Microsoft Surface is not the product with that Microsoft can attack the tablet market, but the company will also launch a secondary version.
