Q1 2016 was not a very favorable fiscal quarter for laptop sellers, and according to TrendForce, sales of this type of mobile product fell by 19% or 8.3 million units compared to the same period last year.
Based on this decrease in sales, there were also some changes in the top PC sellers, so that HP lost first place to Lenovo, and Acer and Apple exchanged places, those from Cupertino dropping one position in Q1 2016.
TrendForce estimates that Apple sold 2.5 million PCs in Q1 2016, and this places it in the 7th place in a top 8 of the biggest laptop sellers, with 2 places above those from Samsung, who have recorded the only increase in sales compared to Q1 2015.
Basically, of the 4 million Macs sold by Apple in Q1 2015, more than half were laptops, but analysts say that people have avoided buying a new Mac model while waiting for the line update, which should to take place in June.
In the first quarter, Apple did not have any new MacBook products ready for the market, nor did it lower MacBook prices to generate sales. Apple's Wintel-based competitors, on the other hand, benefited from Windows 10 and the steady supply of Intel's Skylake CPUs. They were able to have numerous new products ready to promote and ship. As a result, MacBook shipments suffered a massive quarterly decline of 40.4% in the first quarter and Apple retreated to the sixth place in the ranking.
Despite the shortcomings, Apple remains in the top seller of laptops, but it remains to be seen how much longer it will manage to place itself in a good position since sales continue to decrease from one fiscal quarter to another.
