iOS 5 brought a very important thing for users called Notifications Center. In this Notifications Center we have grouped all the notifications received by us plus 2 widgets for the Stocks and Weather applications. Apple has said absolutely nothing about the possibility of releasing APIs for developers that would allow them to make widgets for their own applications, but the company has patented a method by which users can make their own widgets. In the patent about multitouch technology there is a section where Apple talks about the Widget Creator Module, a method by which custom widgets can be made by users themselves.
In the patent it is only specified that this module will allow users to make their own widgets, but there is the possibility that developers will also have some APIs available that will allow them to do the same thing. The jailbreak community moved very quickly after the release of iOS 5 and many useful widgets appeared in these 2 weeks and the hope is that Apple will allow developers to make their own widgets otherwise we will have a new reason to jailbreak.
