How to solve error 3194 during the iOS 5 restore process

The update to iOS 5 turns out to be problematic for the majority of iDevice owners, mainly because of the Apple company that did not prepare its servers for the tens of millions of users ready to update, but also because of the tweaks that help us jailbreak. Error 3194 seems to be the one that appears most frequently in the case of the update to iOS 5 and it is related to the SHSHs available for our terminals. If you do not have a valid SHSH for a version of iOS then this error appears, but in the case of iOS 5 the error should not appear and the problem has 2 causes: the first is related to the Apple servers that do not cope with SHSH requests and the second has the connection with TinyUmbrella and a change made in your operating system.

Now I will teach you how to solve the second cause because only Apple can solve the first. When you downgraded to an old version of iOS, you probably used TinyUmbrella or entered an IP in the Hosts file of your computer that redirects iTunes to Saurik's server. This change causes the error 3194 that appears in iTunes and the solution is very simple. Before starting, close iTunes and prepare to reset your computer.

  • Download TinyUmbrella for Windows or Mac OS X available here.
  • Open the program and choose the Advanced menu from the central menu.
  • After selecting that menu, you will notice a series of other options below and by unchecking them Set Hosts to Cydia on exit veri solve the problem with error 3194.

After unchecking the option, reset the computer to be sure that the change has been implemented and when you reopen it, you should be able to restore without problems.

UPDATED: Starting from Friday, you can no longer restore to iOS 5.
