UPDATE: Kodak decides to sell its patent portfolio to groups of licensors that include Google and Apple

Two weeks ago I told you that Google and Apple are joining forces to acquire Kodak's patent portfolio, and in a press release published today by Kodak have confirmed the sale of patents to two groups of licensors. Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corporation are the companies that bought Kodak's patent portfolio for 525 million dollars, the amount to pay Kodak's debts, but only if the court that judges the bankruptcy petition approves the sale.

Apple is involved in Intellectual Ventures and Google is involved in RPX Corporation, both companies benefiting from this acquisition. As part of the settlement reached today by Kodak, the company agreed to drop lawsuits filed against the companies it sold its patents to, so Apple avoided a lawsuit and Google will most likely have the same benefits. The purchase will allow both those from Google and those from Apple to use Kodak's patented technologies without problems, so soon it is possible to see the same functions available in iOS and Android OS.

UPDATE: It seems that the group of licensors also includes: Samsung, Facebook, RIM, Microsoft, Amazon, Fujifilm, Huawei, HTC, Adobe and Shutterfly.
