17.4 million Android terminals and iDevices would have been activated on the first day of Christmas, most of them were tablets

If you ever had the impression that this year users will overlook the gadgets, well those from Flurry let us know that 17.4 million iDevices and Android terminals would have been activated on the first day of Christmas. The figure is 4 times higher than the one recorded on any of the days of the period 1 - 20 December and this says a lot about consumer preferences, but also about the money spent this year on mobile terminals.

In order to appreciate the magnitude of new devices activated on Christmas Day, Flurry established a baseline using the average from the first 20 days of December. Over this period, daily activations averaged around 4.0 million per day, with a variance of a few hundred thousand in either direction per day. On Christmas Day, activations soared to more than 17.4 million, a 332% increase over the December baseline. By comparison, Christmas Day 2011 held the previous single-day record, having reached 6.8 million device activations. Christmas 2012 is more than 2.5 times larger than Christmas 2011, which surpassed its own baseline by more than 300%.

If we make a comparison with the activations on Christmas Day of 2011, this year the number of activations increased 2.5 times, from 6.8 million to the 17.4 listed by Flurry. The company analyzes information from over 260.000 applications for iOS and Android OS, and if we talk about downloads, their number has doubled compared to a normal day, reaching 330 million. Practically, Android terminals and iDevices proved to be extremely popular this year, it was expected that this would happen anyway, but I think the results are far beyond expectations.

in the end, those from Flurry divided the activations into smartphones and tablets, and the tablets came out invigorating. If on a normal December day 4 times more smartphones than tablets were activated, on Christmas day more tablets were activated than smartphones, but the difference was only 1%. Tablets seem to have been the most popular mobile terminal offered as gifts to friends and family, the trend being completely different from the normal one.
