Tim Cook: The iPhone will someday have a 5-inch screen, Samsung is Apple's main competitor

During the question and answer session that took place after the end the audio conference for the presentation of the financial results for Q2 2013, Tim Cook he answered some slightly uncomfortable questions asked by journalists. One of them is related to 5 inch screen al iPhone 6, the question is of course based on the rumors that have appeared so far on the Internet. Exactly as in the case of technology implementation LTE 4G, Tim Cook claims that the use of a screen of such dimensions would require making some concessions in terms of resolution, color balance, portability, clarity and compatibility of applications, and Apple is not willing to make them. Basically, Tim Cook says that when Apple's partners succeed in producing a 5 inch screen which will be perfect for Apple, it will be implemented in iPhone.

My view continues to be that the iPhone 5 has the absolute best display in the industry. We always strive to create the very best display for our customers. Some customers value large screen sizes. Others value other factors such as resolution, white balance, color, portability, clarity, compatibility with apps... Our competitors have made some significant trade offs in many areas in order to ship a larger display. We will not ship a larger iPhone display while these trade offs exist.

Talking about the competition, Tim Cook says that RIM was in the past the main competitor of Apple, but at the moment Samsung occupies this position. In combination with Google, Samsung turns out to be the main important competitor of Apple and this is because for now the Koreans manage to sell, only according to analysts and without real figures, more smartphones than Apple, and no other company comes close to these performances . Although Tim Cook is confident in Apple's ability to surpass the Koreans, it is unlikely that this will happen very soon.

In the beginning RIM was the strongest player. Of course today our top competitor form a hardware point of view would be Samsung, and married to Google on the software side. They're obviously tough competitors but we feel we have the best products by far... continue to feel very confident about our product pipeline. We have the best ecosystem by far. We're going to keep augmenting it and making it better and better. I feel very good about our competitive position.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Tim Cook expects a product from a new category, not accessed by Apple, to generate important growth for the company and we are probably talking about iWatch.
