Sony to buy Toshiba's camera sensor division

Sony camera image sensorsSony is one of the largest manufacturers of camera sensors, supplying components including for Apple and other smartphone or tablet manufacturers, and today announced the acquisition of the similar division within Toshiba.

Those from Sony spent 155 million dollars to buy the Toshiba division that produces sensors for cameras, the amount being proportional to the size of the factories and the importance of the technologies that exist in them, most analysts confirming that the price is correct.

The purchase made today by Sony will be completed by the end of March next year, since then all Toshiba factories will operate under the management of Sony Semiconductor Corporation, a new company created by Sony.

As we told you above, Sony has been supplying camera modules for Apple for years, and an expansion of production capacities can only be auspicious, as the company will most likely also expand its cooperation with Apple.

Under the agreements, Toshiba will transfer semiconductor fabrication facilities, equipment and related assets of Toshiba's 300mm wafer production line, mainly located at its Oita Operations facility. The purchase price of the Transfer is 19 billion yen. Sony and Toshiba aim to complete the Transfer within the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, subject to any required regulatory approvals.

With this acquisition, Sony will remain the largest manufacturer of image sensors for cameras, and this will allow it to continue developing the best components of this kind for mobile terminals sold worldwide.
