  • In the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, 18% of all e-commerce transactions take place on mobile devices, a percentage far below the global average of 38%
  • 57% of these mobile transactions are made from smartphones
  • 75% of all smartphone transactions in Central and Eastern Europe are completed on Android devices

Bucharest, June 23, 2016 – Criteo (NASDAQ: ortho), international leader in marketing performance, has launched its quarterly study dedicated to commerce on mobile devices, a study that offers a comprehensive analysis of online shopping trends and habits from Q1 2016. This report highlights the fact that users increasingly need of mobility, 38% of all global transactions already taking place with the help of a mobile device. This proportion is predicted to increase in the next period, given that, in countries such as Japan and Great Britain, over 50% of online transactions are already completed from a mobile device. For the first time, the Criteo study also contains detailed information about the countries in the Central and Eastern European region, including Romania, thus providing an overview of one of the e-commerce markets with the fastest growth rate in Europe.

"What we see more and more is that mobile devices are increasingly important when it comes to online shopping, with most consumers searching for products and buying in a process that can use multiple devices," said Alexander Gösswein, Managing Director Central Europe, Criteo. "In Eastern Europe, 18% of all online shopping takes place on mobile devices, and we anticipate a significant growth potential, especially if we look at the situation at the international level, where almost four out of ten e-commerce transactions now have place on mobile devices. Moreover, the increasing importance of mobile devices in e-commerce is also evident by the fact that, now, the value of a shopping cart on a mobile device represents 85% of the value of a shopping cart on a desktop."

Mobile device users in Central and Eastern Europe mainly use Android terminals and prefer to shop on their smartphones

Increasingly, smartphones are becoming the preferred mobile devices when it comes to online shopping, with the majority of mobile transactions globally being completed on a smartphone. Especially in Central and Eastern Europe, 57% of all mobile electronic transactions are made from smartphones and only 43% from tablets. At the regional level, Android devices are more popular than iOS terminals – 75% of all mobile transactions in Central and Eastern Europe are completed on Android devices. In this context, where it becomes obvious that an application for iPhone will no longer be enough to reach many potential buyers, Criteo believes that the local markets will have to reorient themselves towards applications and solutions for Android.

Mobile apps are driving more sales globally, while the number of users using multiple mobile devices to complete a transaction is increasing

The Criteo study also shows that, globally, applications are more effective than mobile browsers for encouraging online purchases, with up to 20% better conversion rates, even compared to desktops.

Moreover, the habit of making purchases from several devices - laptops, tablets or smartphones - has become very popular. Even so, approximately 46% of the transactions carried out on the mentioned devices are also carried out on smartphones, this once again confirming the importance of mobile devices."
