Apple will adopt a new accessory connector

A little over two years after the launch of the Lightning port, the Apple company is preparing to adopt a new type of connector for accessories called "Ultra Accessory Connector" (UAC). Thinner than the USB-C/Lightning ports, but wider than them, the connector is currently offered to manufacturers to test the creation of new products based on it.

The new UAC port is 2.05mm thick and 4.85mm wide, an 8-pin connector hiding inside, it being completely different from what we have now. This new type of connector is only going to be available for accessories for now, with the idea of offering the possibility of getting more space in a case for other components.

Apple's idea is to reduce the space occupied by the UAC connector compared to Lightning and USB-C, but this means a new change for users. More precisely, although UAC could allow the implementation of new functions and components in accessories, users have to change their interconnection cables with the iPhone again.

No one knows why Apple would want to make a new connector for accessories, but it won't be long before it reaches the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. No one knows how long it will take, but it is clear that once every two/three years, the Apple company wants to change the connectors in its products and reset the market of accessories for mobile terminals.

"Measuring in at 2.05mm by 4.85mm at the tip, the 8-pin connector is slightly less thick than USB-C, and nearly half as wide as both USB-C and Lightning. The UAC will allow accessory makers to save space inside their designs versus using an Apple Lightning port or USB-C. Apple will allow accessory manufacturers to make Lightning to UAC, USB-A to UAC, and 3.5mm headset jacks to UAC, which would allow headphones with a UAC port to connect to various Apple devices.”
