Huawei is one of the largest producers of telephones and telecommunications equipment in the whole world, this being known by many people, especially after the US sanctions scandal. Some of you may remember, others may not, but in 2019 the president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, signed a memorandum with the US by which our country undertakes to somewhat block Huawei from supplying equipment for 5G networks.
In 2020, Huawei tried to carry out a campaign to promote its brand and image in Romania, especially to try to reverse the authorities' decision regarding its role in the country's future 5G infrastructure, but it was unsuccessful. A new draft law approved by the Romanian Government during the past few days practically blocks Huawei from supplying 5G telecommunications equipment in Romania because it will need CSAT approval for this.
Huawei: What Happens in Romania after the New Draft Law
Huawei must prove to the CSAT that its equipment is safe, and that data cannot be stolen, but this is very difficult to achieve, because the Americans have most likely provided evidence that the equipment is not safe. If there is no such evidence provided by the Americans for Romania, then maybe there is a chance for Huawei to get CSAT approval for its equipment, but it would have to be extremely convincing.
Huawei already has the equipment used by some telecommunications operators in Romania in their own 5G infrastructure at the moment, something that of course represents a very big problem for its partners. If it is decided not only to limit Huawei's access to the supply of 5G equipment, but also to eliminate the existing ones, then many companies will have to replace part of the infrastructure with products from other suppliers, which of course requires money and time, things that will make it difficult to expand 5G coverage in several areas of the country.
Huawei has not yet said anything about this new law approved in Romania, so we just have to see what kind of information will come from the company because the situation itself is a very important one.
