Drug Use and Danger for Young People in Romania

Drug use, the danger of young people in Romania

The authorities in Romania talk about the extremely high dangers brought by the consumption of drugs among young people, an extremely serious problem that many young people in Romania face, unfortunately.

International Day Against Drug Use and Trafficking – 26 June 2022.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is marked every year on June 26 to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

The theme of this year's campaign is "Tackling drug challenges in health and humanitarian crises".

Campaign objectives:

  • Awareness of the importance of listening to children and young people as the first step in helping them grow up healthy and safe.
  • Mobilization of parents, educators, medical personnel from preventive services and decision-makers, to prevent the use of illegal drugs, through a real attention given to children and young people.
  • Raising awareness among young people about the dangers of illegal drug use.
    Key messages:
  • Strong bond between parents and children is based on attention, listening and love.
  • The first step to effectively preventing drug use and other risky behaviors is listening with empathy and care.
  • Everyone needs to get involved to protect young people from dangerous substances.
  • Illegal drugs are a danger to the whole society.
PARENTS have the greatest influence in helping their children grow up happy and learn to handle life's difficult situations well:
  • Even in very difficult circumstances, a strong bond between children and parents can mean fewer risky behaviors.
  • Strong child-parent bonding involves listening to your children and showing them you care.
  • Spending even a little time each day with your child and giving them your undivided attention can really help.
  • When appropriate, ask your child: where and with whom he will be, for how long and what he will be doing.
TEACHERS can have a positive influence on children and young people to help them grow up happy and optimistic:
  • The first step to a strong connection between children and teachers is to listen carefully and empathetically.
  • Offer counseling to children and young people who need it, without judging them.
  • Even in very difficult situations, children who are in school and feel a sense of belonging are less vulnerable to risky behaviors.
  • Do everything you can to keep the kids in school.

Disorders caused by drug use undermine relationships with loved ones, damage family life and can ruin children's and young people's opportunities for education and employment. Their impact is felt in communities, criminal justice systems and throughout society.

The number of overdose deaths in the 50-64 age group increased by 82% between 2012 and 2020.

This reflects the aging trend among high-risk drug users and, in some countries, the increase in deaths associated with prescription opioids, often among women, possibly related to pain management and misuse of the drugs .

It is estimated that in 2020 there were at least 5.800 overdose deaths involving illegal drugs in the European Union – an estimated overdose death rate of 16,7 deaths per million people for the adult population.

Most of these deaths are associated with polytoxicity, which usually involves combinations of illegal opioids, other illegal drugs, medications, and alcohol.

In Romania, the consumption of any illicit drug has twice the prevalence among young adults (age group 15-34 years), compared to those recorded in the general population (15-64 years), but the rates are similar to those identified in the population schoolgirl (16 years old).
