This call was made during a symposium organized by the National Bank of Romania, emphasizing the importance and urgency of this problem in the current European context.
The Romanian Treasury, representing an impressive collection of valuables including gold, works of art and important documents, was transferred to Moscow during World War I based on a bilateral agreement. In a unique gesture, Romania has stored its entire treasure in another state, hoping to keep it safe. Unfortunately, these goods were never returned, remaining seized in Russia.
Tomac emphasized that, in light of the current tensions in Europe and the war started by Russia, it is crucial to take action to recover the Treasure. He argued that this is the opportune moment to bring this issue to the attention of the European institutions, especially within the discussions on combating the trafficking of cultural goods relocated during wartime.
Tomac announced the initiation of an extensive initiative to promote the situation of the Romanian Treasury. The first step involves the presentation in the European Parliament of two volumes translated into English, "The Romanian National Bank Treasure Taken to Moscow" and "Destinul Tezaurului României", which document the history and importance of the treasure.
Underlining the historical, political and monetary dimension of this matter, Tomac mentioned that the approach is an act of national dignity. This initiative, he said, is essential and must be pursued relentlessly until the hoard is effectively recovered.
