Will there be Firefox on iOS? Only if Apple allows it!

Many owners of iDevices have been waiting for the iOS version of the famous Firefox browser for some time, but this wait could be in vain if Apple does not change the current policy regarding the applications accepted in the AppStore. Matt Brubeck, one of Firefox's mobile application developers, a declared that at the moment the company he works for is not putting any effort into porting the browser to iOS. Firefox is built on the Gecko platform and Apple requires all browsers in the AppStore to be built on the webkit platform on which Safari is built and runs.

Firefox refuses to rebuild its own browser to work on the Webkit platform because, according to them, it would represent essential changes and would alter the browsing experience too much. A solution could be an application made after the model of SkyFire or Opera Mini, but for Firefox this is not a solution because the result would not be related to the way the Firefox browser works.

We have no plans to release the full Firefox browser for Apple iOS devices. Mozilla could create a browser that did one of those things, but it wouldn't be related to Firefox in any way. unless Apple removes these restrictions, Mozilla will not spend time and money on this project. The development would likely violate the SDK agreement, and it would not be distributable to non-jailbreak iOS users.

It seems that inside the company there are some employees working on a port for iDevices of the Firefox browser, but this version could only be available through Cydia because Apple would not accept it in the AppStore because it would violate a good part of its rules. I don't think that Mozilla would have anything to gain if they didn't develop an application for iOS, so the whole blame falls on the shoulders of Apple.
