Apple surpasses Dell, becomes the 3rd largest producer of PCs in the world thanks to the iPad

Apple managed to climb to the 3rd place in the list of PC manufacturers in the world, surpassing Dell and Lenovo due to the sales recorded last year of the iPad tablet. The information comes from the analysis firm Canalys, which published today an article detailing how the PC market evolved last year. The study includes tablet PCs among PCs because these devices with screens larger than 7 inches offer a very varied range of applications that ultimately allow the user to use it for almost the same things as they would use a netbook for example.

Pads gave the market momentum in 2010, just as netbooks did the year before,' said Canalys Senior Analyst Daryl Chiam. 'We are encouraging vendors to plan for the future and not to remain stuck in the past. Any argument that a pad is not a PC is simply out of sync,' said Chiam. 'With screen sizes of seven inches or above, ample processing power, and a growing number of applications, pads offer a computing experience comparable to netbooks. They compete for the same customers and will happily coexist. As with smart phones, some users will require a physical keyboard, while others will do without.'

Last year the PC market grew by 19.2, with Apple contributing a good part of this percentage as the company recorded a growth of 241%, 10 times higher than the growth recorded by Lenovo and 20 times higher than that recorded by by Dell. The sales of the iPad tablet have contributed to the ranking of Apple on the 3rd place in the top of the big sellers of PCs on the planet with 11.5 million devices sold. Last year the iPad tablet was available on the market for only a few months, but this year Apple will rise to the 2nd place thanks to the sales of the iPad tablet and Macs.
