Video: Kal-El – the most advanced quad-core processor for tablets

Kal-El it is probably the first quad-core chip that will be implemented in any tablet and if you remember, we talked about it for the first time in February. Those from Nvidia ii prepare has been on the market for some time and Android tablets will be the first to benefit from this truly remarkable technology. The video clip above represents a demo of how this new graphic chip works, but what is really impressive is the fact that the processor is able to reproduce without problems the dynamic lighting from the demo, i.e. dynamic light effects that are projected on objects and fluctuates in the environment.

NVIDIA demoed the new goodness on a Honeycomb slate with 1280 x 800 resolution and the frame rates remained smooth throughout. In order to emphasize the generational leap that we can expect with Kal-El, the company switched off two of the four cores momentarily, which plunged performance down to less than 10fps. That means the simulations we're watching require a full quartet of processing cores on top of the 12-core GPU NVIDIA has in Kal-El. Mind-boggling stuff.

These new chips should be available on the market starting from August and will probably be part of Nvidia Tegra 3, a platform that will reach the tablets of some lucky manufacturers. Apple says that the iPad 2 has 9 times more graphics power than the first model, but I don't think it comes anywhere close to Kal-El. Those from Nvidia managed to make an extremely high-performance processor that will leave the iPad 2 far behind, now it depends if there will be developers interested in making games for it or everyone will wait for Apple to produce something similar and make games for the App Store where people actually buy them. Until another Nvidia releases something great and Apple has work to do next year.
