iOS 5 software update - what it is and how it works

One of the surprising functions implemented by Apple in iOS 5 is related to updating the operating system directly from our terminals. OTA or over-the-air is the abbreviation for the option to install an update for iOS directly in our terminal without using the computer and the iTunes program. Probably some of you are now thinking that they will have to download firmwares of several hundred MB in their own terminals, firmwares that will then install themselves and after resetting the device we will see all the new features.

Well, things will not be like that at all because Apple will implement what is called "delta update". A delta update for iOS is an update that contains only iOS files that have been modified by Apple. In iOS 5, through the software update function, we will only download the files from iOS that have been modified, files that probably occupy only a few tens of MB and that will probably be installed very simply and easily. The delta updates save users from downloading hundreds of useless MB on their own terminals and will help us to apply much faster the changes that Apple has implemented in the new version of iOS.

In conclusion, iOS 5 will be updated on the phone by installing a small delta update in which only the modified files are, and on the computer through iTunes we will be able to install the firmware in their original version.
