Apple could launch HD+ 1080p movies in iTunes

If you didn't already know, iOS 5 beta 2 offers iPad 2 owners possibility to transfer movies in 1080p format directly to the tablet and view them there. Until now, iTunes did not even read movies whose format was 1080p, but now this is possible, but of course we are talking about movies converted to the format accepted by iTunes. If the iPad 2 with its A5 chip will be able to play movies in 1080p format, then the iPhone 5 will certainly be just as capable considering that it will have the same A5 chip and if tradition is respected then it should have even more RAM.

Thus far, 1080p HD content has largely eluded users of Apple products, with HD versions of videos on the company's digital download service maxing out 720p (1280×720) and chief executive Steve Jobs balking at adoption of Blu-ray on Macs due to licensing complications and other challenges that he said threatened to translate into a "bag of hurt."

But that could begin to change later this year, as a handful of feature films being submitted to the iTunes store for a release in the September and October timeframe are being sent with documentation for an optional 1920×1080 resolution, according to people familiar with the matter.

Apple has already discussed with the big production houses in the USA and many of them have sent Apple 1080p versions of some films that are going to reach the big screens only in the fall of this year. Apple refused to offer users the possibility to see movies in 1080p format "fearing" that many will not have strong enough Internet connections and the service itself will be accused of working poorly. This year, Apple seems to have changed its mind and HD+ movies will be available in iTunes, and in the fall Apple could even launch an Apple TV 3G compatible with the new format.
