iOS 5.1.1 – jailbreak and unlock

Tonight Apple released iOS 5.1.1 for iDevice owners and I assume that many of you are now wondering what steps to follow to jailbreak and decode this version of the operating system. I'll tell you from the start that for now you can't jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 using the limera1n exploit from redsn0w, so don't update if you want to jailbreak, even if you have an iPhone 3GS/4, iPad or iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G . If you have an iPad 2/3 or an iPhone 4S then you certainly cannot jailbreak.

You know that now Pod2G is working on an untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5.1 and you are probably wondering how iOS 5.1.1 affects this process. Well, I have no answer for you, but if Pod2G's exploits were not blocked then there should be no problems porting the jailbreak solution to iOS 5.1.1. When I find out more news, I will let you know.

Regarding the unlock, DO NOT update to iOS 5.1.1 if you use Gevey decoding cards because your baseband will be updated during the iOS 5.1.1 installation process. If you update the baseband, you cannot downgrade it, so you are left without the option to unlock. If you use ultrasn0w to unlock, then do not update because there is no jailbreak solution and even if you have an iPad baseband, you cannot decode iPhone 3GS terminals.

In conclusion, if you are a jailbreaker or unlocker, you do not need to update to iOS 5.1.1 yet.

UPDATED: It seems that redsn0w recognizes iOS 5.1.1, but even so it is NOT recommended to update, even if you have a neverlocked terminal.
