The iPhone produces twice as much profit for Apple as the iPad tablet

In a court hearing held in a trial between Samsung and Apple, part of the documentation presented to the court reveals the fact that iPhones produce twice as much profit as tablets iPad. The documents refer only to the USA, the country where approximately one third of the receipts are registered Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, so they are extremely important for the entire business. Practically between the years 2010 - 2012 the profit generated by iPhone it was almost double the profit generated by the iPad tablet and the subsidies granted by mobile phone operators played an important role in the whole equation.

Apple Inc earned gross margins of 49 to 58 percent on its US iPhone sales between April 2010 and the end of March 2012, while gross margins on the iPad were much lower during much of that period, according to a court filing. The information was revealed on Thursday in a freshly unsealed statement from an Apple expert witness, filed in the company's patent battle against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. An Apple representative declined to comment on the court filing. Between October 2010 and the end of March 2012, Apple had gross margins of 23 to 32 percent on its US iPad sales, which generated revenue of more than $13 billion for Apple, the filing said. Apple does not typically disclose profit margins on individual products.

During the period mentioned in the documents, Apple obtained revenues of 33 billion dollars only from the sale of iPhone terminals, so we are talking about 16 billion dollars generated only by the US every year for the American company. Practically, it is much more profitable for Apple to keep the iPhone on the market instead of the iPad tablet and of course the evolution of the products will be extremely strongly influenced by profit.
