Digi Mobil – how useful it is on the iPhone and the myths of unlimited internet or unlimited minutes

Digi Mobil is the fourth mobile phone operator in Romania and with the launch of the offer Optimum Unlimited managed to convince an impressive number of customers of Orange, Telekom and Vodafone to leave their old subscriptions. Digi mobil attracted hordes of customers in an unprecedented migration with the illusion of unlimited internet and unlimited minutes both in Romania and abroad, but many quickly discovered that things are not so "rosy" at RCS&RDS. I'm not a fan of Digi Mobil and I don't find it useful beyond talking on the phone a lot in Romania, and I'll explain why below.

Digi Mobil and unlimited minutes with limitation

At a price of only €5 for subscribers of some services, Digi Mobil offers customers the opportunity to talk unlimitedly both in Romania and abroad, the partnership with Vodafone for national roaming offering coverage everywhere in Romania for voice calls. Although the idea of being able to talk on the phone in Romania without limits is widely adopted by mobile operators, in the case of international calls things are different. Although those at Digi Mobil offer unlimited international minutes, the reality is that after 800-1000 minutes spoken abroad by customers, the operator's employees start making calls.

It all starts with a temporary suspension of the customer's subscription due to possible fraud, after which an employee calls the customer to suggest that he limit himself to talking on the phone, otherwise he risks having his subscription terminated. The phone can be replaced by an SMS with the same message, and the practice is an embarrassing one for an operator that promises unlimited but limits you in the use of services. I know that in Romania including the authorities limit our thinking by saying that unlimited actually means limited, but legally and morally, unlimited means unlimited and you can talk on the phone as much as you want without restrictions, but not with Digi Mobil.

Digi Mobil and unlimited internet between certain borders

We now move on to unlimited internet from Digi Mobil, which this time has no limits, except in terms of speed and availability. We start with the speed which is anyway very low, lower than that of any other operator in Romania, it being limited after 5 GB of network traffic, the resulting speed being much too low to use the Internet. If this is normal, it is abnormal that beyond the cities the internet is no longer available, and in the partnership with Vodafone, those from Digi Mobil offer only 100 MB of national internet, i.e. absolutely nothing.

Basically, Digi Mobil has internet at the limit of decency in cities and non-existent outside them, but for €5 can you ask for more than that? From my point of view Digi Mobil is not useful for an iPhone unless you talk a lot on the phone and don't really care about mobile internet, otherwise Orange, Telekom and Vodafone have much better offers with affordable internet outside the cities.

I'm writing this article because I've been asked by a lot of people if it's worth switching from Telekom/Orange/Vodafone to Digi Mobil, and I'll tell you again: for talking on the phone it's worth giving up subscriptions without discussion, but if you want to use your the terminal at full capacity then you will need internet and Digi Mobil can't give you anything decent.
