Microsoft and Facebook are building a transatlantic internet network called MAREA

In a surprising announcement made last night, Facebook si Microsoft have confirmed a partnership to interconnect the US and Spain through a transatlantic cable called MAREA, he will facilitate the transfer of data between the two continents.

The new connection will connect Virginia Beach, USA, to Bilbao, Spain, being able to support data transfer of up to 160 Tbps, the route on which the cable is to be placed being different from the current ones that allow data transfer between continents.

The new cable SEA which will be placed by Facebook and Microsoft will allow the two companies to transfer data between the US and Europe at much higher speeds than until now, being able to decongest the current routes used by the companies.

Nor Facebook nor Microsoft they did not provide information regarding the amount to which the investment required by the location will amount to the SEA cable, but we are most likely talking about several billion dollars that will pay off over time by reducing costs for interconnection using current connections.

In order to better serve our customers and provide the type of reliable and low-latency connectivity they deserve, we are continuing to invest in new and innovative ways to continuously upgrade both the Microsoft Cloud and the global Internet infrastructure.

construction the SEA cable it is going to start in the next period and should be completed by October of next year, so then we should be able to transfer data between Microsoft and Facebook servers in the US and Europe much easier.
