iOS 10.1 brings the new Portrait feature to iPhone 7 Plus

iOS 10.1 brings the Portrait function to the iPhone 7 Plus, allowing the recording of pictures with a blur on the background, i.e. the bokeh effect of DSLR devices.

iOS beta 10.1 1 released today by Apple brings a feature presented by Apple at the presentation conference iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. We are talking about the portrait function, which is exclusively dedicated to the iPhone 7 Plus, using the terminal's dual camera to record pictures with bokeh mode, that is, applying blur to the background and highlighting the main subject.

At the moment, the Portrait function is offered in beta format by the Apple company in the Camera application of iOS 10.1 beta 1 on the iPhone 7 Plus, with a dedicated section. When accessing that section, the user is told very clearly that the Portrait function is available in beta version, so any kind of complaints are canceled from the start.

Those from TechCrunch describe in detail here the way this system works called Portrait, it uses both cameras to create an image in which the main subject is in evidence. More precisely, the Camera application uses the telephoto camera to record the subject and the wide-angle camera to record the background, creating a 9-level layer to analyze all the elements in the image.

In this idea, as we take more and more pictures, he will know better and better how to bring the subject to the foreground and apply blur to the background.

Here, the quad-core processor of the iPhone 7 Plus is used to its maximum capacity, having to create multiple images and analyze them in real time to record a picture. Analyzing in real time each layer of the picture, iOS 10.1 automatically chooses which are clearer and which to apply blur, to create the final effect that we see in the images below.

"There is no zooming, digital or otherwise, in Portrait mode. Instead, the Portrait mode exclusively uses the 56mm lens to shoot the image and the wide angle lens to gather the perspective data that allows it to generate a 9-layer depth map. Once it has this 9-layer slice, it can then pick and choose which layers are sharp and which get a gaussian (random) blur effect applied to them. Once the telephoto lens detects the subject, using autofocus and other stuff we'll talk about in a second, the image processor inside the iPhone 7 will then apply blur in greater and greater amounts to the layers that are further away from that subject."

As this function evolves, we will learn more and more information about it, but the essence is above.
