iPhone 8 – why it will cost 1000 dollars

iPhone 8 will cost 1000 dollars according to the latest rumors, and today we have an explanation for such a high selling price.

iPhone 8 it has been presented for some time as having a very high final sale price, close to the value of 1000 dollars for the "cheapest" of the models. The iPhone 8 will have a 5.8-inch OLED screen, wireless charging, a glass case, at least 128 GB of storage space, Touch ID on the screen and other interesting novelties.

In order to be able to launch an iPhone 8 with so many novelties, the Apple company had to make changes for the components used, and some will be much more expensive. Among them is the new 3D Touch module for the OLED screen of the iPhone 8, which will be approximately 3 times more expensive than the one used in the iPhone 7.

Apple buys the 3D Touch modules from TPK, and if now a module costs 7-9 dollars, for the iPhone 8 it could end up costing up to 19-22 dollars. Apple would have accepted this price for the new 3D Touch module of the iPhone 8, and it will be reflected in the final price that the Apple company will charge from users, so here we have an explanation for the high final price.

iPhone 8 – why it will cost 1000 dollars

The iPhone 8's OLED screen is much more fragile than the iPhone 7's LCD, so the pressure sensor for 3D Touch is much more complex and implicitly more expensive to manufacture. Normally this new 3D Touch module for iPhone 8 should have been only 50% more expensive than the one in iPhone 7, but the increase seems to be 150%, and Apple would have accepted it.

Apart from this new 3D Touch module, Apple will also have to pay more for the OLED screen of the iPhone 8 compared to the LCD of the iPhone 7. The integration of wireless charging will also increase the production cost of the iPhone 8 compared to that of the iPhone 7, and the glass case is more difficult to manufacture and mount than an aluminum one.

"Touch panel maker TPK Holdings has quoted US$18-22 for 3D Touch solution for use in a new iPhone equipped with OLED panel to be launched later in 2017 and Apple has accepted the quote. The solution directly bonds 3D Touch sensors on LTPS TFT-LCD display panels of the iPhone, but 3D Touch solution for OLED panels entails bonding of a glass cover on the front and back side of an OLED panel each to reinforce the fragile OLED panel."

Adding all these costs, we can easily understand why the manufacturing price of the iPhone 8 could approach the value of 400 dollars, or it could be even higher than that. From here to 1000 dollars is a small step, Apple always wanting to extract as much money as possible from its terminals, so the iPhone 8 will be much more expensive than many expect.
