Apple no longer wants OLED screens from Samsung

Apple no longer wants to buy OLED screens for the iPhone from Samsung, being in advanced discussions with at least one other supplier at the moment.

Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), is looking with great interest to get rid of the OLED screens that the Samsung company currently supplies, the American company wanting to find another partner for this component. In this idea, those from Apple are in discussions with a company called BOE, which is the largest manufacturer of LCD screens in China, and is now investing in OLED.

The investment in production lines for OLED screens is made after Apple's promises to buy screens from it, but several billion dollars are needed for everything to be done. BOE intends to invest 7 billion dollars in two new factories to produce standard and flexible OLED screens, part of which will be bought by Apple to be used in the iPhone in the future.

BOE started ordering equipment for one of the factories already in June, so the discussions with Apple are not new and most probably some commitments were signed in order to be able to make the investments. The sums that the BOE will invest are enormous, but the money that it will earn from the Apple company will definitely cover the investments in a few years, as the Americans desperately need the diversification of suppliers.

"BOE, China's largest display maker, is pushing Apple to supply flexible organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The company plans to build a large-scale Apple line to meet Apple's demand for OLED supply and demand. BOE executives recently visited Apple and it is said that they have shared such a business strategy."

Samsung is now the only company that supplies OLED screens for iPhone X, and Apple has already discussed with LG, which will invest to produce OLED screens as well. Apple would like Sharp and BOE to be the other two suppliers of OLED screens, with Samsung following and certainly remaining the main supplier in 2018, but from 2019 things could change and Apple could still buy from at least one of the other companies .
