Phablets, or phones that have diagonals of at least 5.5 inches, will dominate smartphone sales in the coming years, according to information provided by analysts from IDC. They claim that by 2019, phablets will represent the majority of smartphone sales recorded globally, the difference from standard ones will gradually increase until that period.
It is estimated that sales of phablets will increase by 18.1% in the next two years, while sales of standard phones will decrease by 7.4%, but no one expected the trend to be different. This consumer appetite for phones with large screens has been perfectly visible in recent years and in the case of the iPhone series, with the Plus models having better sales than the normal ones in the iPhone 8 series, for the first time.
Adding the fact that the iPhone X has a screen with a diagonal of 5.8 inches, the largest ever used in an Apple phone, it is clear why analysts believe that phablets will dominate smartphone sales. Apple sells the most premium smartphones of all manufacturers, and iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus have generated a huge increase in phablet sales in recent months and the trend will continue.
"Meanwhile, phablets (smartphones with a screen size of 5.5 inches to <7 inches) will far outpace total market growth by climbing from 611 million units in 2017 to 1 billion units in 2021, representing a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR ) of 18.1%. In comparison, the total smartphone market is expected to grow at a 3.0% CAGR during the same period, while normal smartphones (under 5.5 inches) will decline 7.4%."
Although a few years ago phablets were seen as an oddity and I was in the agreement of many then, now things are completely different and they are sought by most people. In the next two years, interest in them will grow even more, so it remains to be seen if the analysts' predictions are true, or if they have not yet understood how popular these types of mobile phones are.
