UBER allows users to communicate with 911 service operators, based on the current implementation in the US, via SMS after asking for help, being able to provide additional information about the situation and their location. UBER ran a pilot program in three US cities where the 911 service is able to receive SMS messages, and the success there motivated the company to launch it in the entire country, but for now only there, unfortunately not elsewhere.
“As part of its ongoing efforts to keep drivers and passengers safe, Uber is introducing a new text-to-911 functionality for US riders, who can request help via SMS from 911. It could be a useful service, in especially if a driver or passenger needs to discreetly contact emergency services without escalating a situation."
UBER they should offer the function in Romania at some point, as we have the 113 number where people with hearing and speech impairments can ask for help via SMS, so maybe the system could be used like this. Of course, the technical solution will have to be discussed including with those from STS before implementation, so it will definitely take some time until UBER could launch this extremely good function including in our country.
UBER has implemented this new function to increase the safety of people who make trips through its alternative transport platform, so we can only hope that it will quickly reach Romania as well.
