Valeriu Gheorghita says again that dose 4 of the vaccine is far from being considered useful for humanity at the moment, but he says that if not enough people are vaccinated with the initial scheme, and dose 3, it is possible that a new variant of COVID- 19 to appear, and to bypass the immune response more easily.
"People must understand an important message at the moment, the current vaccines are effective including the Omicron variant, if we look at those important objectives that interest us from a medical point of view, and from an individual risk point of view.
We are talking about the risk of developing a serious condition, the risk of being hospitalized with a serious condition, the risk of death. Even after a first vaccination schedule, an efficiency of 50% - 55% is maintained compared to hospitalization, this efficiency increases to, I repeat, 90% after the administration of the booster dose.
For this reason it is very important to do the booster dose, but I do not believe in this logic of administering booster doses, and I would like to reassure the population from this point of view, if they have this concern, of course. Even in Israel, where dose 4 was discussed, it was not a unanimously accepted recommendation.
Even in those situations, it would have been addressed only to vulnerable people over 60 years old, but at the moment I don't think it's appropriate to talk about it. What I anticipate, at the moment, for the future, from an epidemiological point of view, the main risk related to the Omicron variant is that of the large number of cases.
When you have a large number of infections, and the virus multiplies a lot, it will evolve, and has a high risk of accumulating new mutations, and in a few months we may wake up with a new viral variant, and we don't know how it will behave then when it will infect people."
