Austria CHALLENGES Romania's IMMEDIATE EU Application for Schengen Area Accession

Austria continues to defy Romania, the Viennese government led by Karl Nehammer refusing to lift the veto it gave in December, but this despite the fact that signals are coming from the European Commission that this should not happen, and a Romanian MEP calls for its more active involvement in the Schengen accession process.

Austria received various requests from the European Commission for the acceptance of Romania in the Schengen Area, refusing to listen to them, but its role in helping our country is an essential one because without help from Brussels it will be extremely difficult to accept our country in this system , the same being valid including for Bulgaria.

Austria has found several allies to support its policies based on which to reduce migration in Europe, even if some of the required measures are radical, but the European Commission must get involved much more seriously to help Romania, and this is because in the current context, accession to Schengen seems to be a dream far too difficult for our country to achieve.

"Romania continues to benefit from the active support of the European Commission for accession to the Schengen area. I discussed with the Commissioner about the actions that the European executive is taking in this direction, but also about how we can change the veto applied by the right-wing government in Austria.

I requested, on this occasion, the European Commission to mediate the dialogue between Romania and Austria with the aim of identifying a solution to move towards a positive vote, as soon as possible. I also proposed that the European executive organize new technical meetings aimed at keeping the subject high on the European agenda."
