Italy, through its Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, makes an extremely important official announcement, which has effects both for Austria, with which it is allied, and for Romania's accession to Schengen, and this is because everything comes before the Council for Justice and Business Internal, from June 8, organized in the state of Luxembourg, extremely important decisions being awaited.
Italy also allies itself with Sweden to force the rethinking of the asylum and migration system in Europe, demanding the abandonment of the idea of relocating refugees in all the countries of the European Union, saying that it is a concept that would not be a mechanism of solidarity, and putting Africa in the center of the main problems related to illegal migration in Europe.
Italy has been asking for some time to rethink the system based on which illegal migrants are repatriated, and considering the huge increase in the number of people who have arrived in the country in recent months, it is understandable why the government in Rome is putting pressure on Brussels, especially that the future of Schengen, to which Romania has been hoping for over 10 years to join, is at stake in the following months.
"In this crucial phase of the negotiations on the European Pact on Asylum and Migration, I appreciate the effort of the Swedish EU Presidency to reach a possible conclusion of the negotiations at the next Justice and Home Affairs Council, scheduled for Thursday, June 8, in Luxembourg.
Our country is still not focusing on the resettlement tool because it has not proven to be a solidarity mechanism as it was designed. Italy expects a change of pace from Europe especially in the context of the external dimension, the only real structural solution to the problem of migration from Africa."
