Every time you search on Google to solve the problems you have with your phone, or when you try to customize your phone or install an application, you come across a multitude of terms whose meaning you do not know. In the following I will try to explain as many terms as possible, the list will be completed with the passage of time. If you have questions, you can put them in the help page.

firmware – The iPhone runs the iPhoneOS platform created by Apple. The software run by the phone is called firmware.

blackra1n – blackra1n is a universal jailbreak software created by geohot and works with iPhone 2G/3G/3GS iPod Touch.

redsn0w – program with which you can jailbreak firmware 3.0 and 3.0.1. you can find it very easily with any search on Google. It works for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod touch first generation. The latest version is 0.8.

purplera1n – jailbreak software created especially for iPhone 3GS, works only with software version 3.0.

purplesn0w – unlocking software created exclusively for iPhone 3GS, works only with baseband 04.26.

Recovery Mode - the default method of doing a restore, when you click on restore or update in iTunes, the phone is automatically entered into Recovery Mode to do the operation. It is the only method to restore iPhone 3GS which cannot be entered in DFU mode. To see how you can put the phone in DFU mode, click here.

DFU mode – the alternative method to restore. It can be used as the first or last solution in case Recovery mode will not work. The phone must be entered manually or with the help of some programs in this state. To see how you can put the phone in DFU mode, click here.

custom ipsw – is a modified version of the original Apple firmware created exclusively with the help of Pwnagetool. With the help of this firmware you can avoid an update of baseband which could leave you without the possibility to use ultrasn0w, this ipsw is already jailbroken, it is not necessary to go through the normal jailbreak process, at the same time you can also make some detailed changes such as: changing the boot logo or Recovery Mode logo, you can increase the system partition or add some applications that will be installed through the restore process. Push - in short, warns the user about e-mails or messages received after he has closed the mail application or a messenger type application. Basically, those applications run in the background and at a certain period of time the phone checks if there are new messages and alerts the user by displaying a pop-up message in the springboard.

Installous – application installed from Cydia with the help of which cracked applications can be installed directly on the phone, without being synchronized with iTunes.

Official Carrier - means the "official" operator that has a contract with Apple to distribute iPhone terminals. Files containing the automatic settings for internet/mms/voice mail are inserted into the phone's firmware, making it no longer necessary to contact the operator to provide this information.

Tethered Jailbreak – it's basically a semi-jailbreak. What this means? The normal jailbreak means hacking the system files in order to control the phone as an administrator. The normal jailbreak is done only once and the process must not be repeated until the restore. Tethered Jailbreak means that the process must be repeated at every restart and can only be done with the help of special tools (in this case blackra1n is enough), otherwise the system cannot be started, and consequently neither can the phone.

Voice Control – is an application created by Apple and introduced through OS 3.0 in June 2009. What does this application do? Basically what it says, you can control your phone through voice commands. You can call a contact by saying "call Jim", you can open your iPod, you can tell the phone what song you want to listen to and much more. Unfortunately, this application does not have support for the Romanian language, so you can only use it with one of the official languages ​​recognized by Apple.

Mobile terminal - an application similar to the one in Mac OSX called Termina that allows users to run commands with administrator permissions on the phone.

AppSync - is a hack created by those from hackulous through which cracked applications can be installed directly from iTunes.

blacksn0w - the first unlock program created by geohot designed to unlock phones that have baseband 05.11.07.

Root password – Any operating system has a password that grants full privileges only to the administrator of that system. iPhone OS makes no difference, it grants administrator access only to those who have the correct password. Access to the phone is done ONLY through SSH and ONLY after jailbreaking and installing it from Cydia. The default root password of any jailbroken phone is Alpine and my request is to CHANGE IT! iFile – is an application that allows you to navigate through the phone's system files and install .deb files directly from the phone. The application can be found in Cydia, you can download it from the BigBoss repo and it costs $4.
