iPhone used as mine detector

iPhone terminals are so versatile that they can be used for almost any kind of thing, but what I present to you now represents a very unusual use. Some researchers from Harvard they thought of making an iPhone application capable of it detector mines hidden underground. We are not talking about mines in which various minerals or coal or anything else would be found, but I am talking about anti-personnel mines that are used in theaters of war.

Harvard researchers mounted an iPhone on a mine detector and using a special application on the iPhone, data collected from the mine detector is displayed. The data are specially presented so that the person using the detector has a clear picture of the object that is under the ground. The system made by them is called PETALS - Pattern Enhancement Tool for Assisting Land mine Sensing and in the first tests it worked flawlessly. The idea is more than interesting, but I don't know who would rush to test the new system.
